Specifically, it’s the ratio of a fan’s real power usage to a calculated baseline power, considering both the airflow and pressure points. Current Standards and Regulations
The ASHRAE 90.1-2022 standard has officially adopted FEI as the preferred fan efficiency metric, replacing the previous Fan Efficiency Grade (FEG). ASHRAE 90.1-2022 specifies that each fan and fan array must meet a minimum FEI of 1.00 or higher at its highest design airflow rate.
However, there are exceptions. For instance, fans integrated into brands like AAON equipment are exempt from the FEI requirements under this standard.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has incorporated ASHRAE 90.1-2022 into its Building Energy Codes program, recognizing the standard’s potential to significantly improve energy efficiency in commercial buildings. By March 6, 2026, states must ensure their commercial building codes comply with or exceed this standard.
In addition, a DOE ruling published on May 31, 2023, introduced a new testing procedure for fans and blowers, integrating FEI into the process. Starting October 31, 2023, manufacturers will be required to include FEI ratings in their marketing materials and product labels, unless granted an extension.
